GlobalGolfPost: Foley on Woods, Rose

I’m back writing for Global Golf Post starting this week. For those of you unfamiliar with it, Global Golf Post is a free online digital magazine that hits your inbox every Monday.

This week I wrote about my recent conversation with Sean Foley, timely considering that Tiger Woods appears poised to win again this morning:

Tiger Woods is on his way to winning three times in five starts – and the best is yet to come. That’s Sean Foley’s perspective. Despite an impressive start to the year, Woods’ Canadian coach says he expects the golfer to get better in the coming months. Woods, it seems, is still many range sessions away from nailing all the key elements of the golfer’s overhauled swing.

“We’ve done a good job of having no injuries or flare-ups with Tiger,” Foley says from his Orlando home where he spent the day working with Justin Rose.  “But eight months from now I’ll watch him hit a ball and go, ‘That’s it.’ So we are not even there yet.”

With that in mind, Foley admits it seems ridiculous that people last year questioned whether Woods would return to form.

“For people to lose their faith in his abilities to the extent that they asked out loud whether he’d win again – come on,” Foley says with an exasperated tone.

  • The most telling thing about Foley is the way he talks about his golfers.

During his talk at the Ontario Golf Superintendents Assoc. he was telling a story (not exact quotes but along these lines) about Justin Rose and how Rose was describing his golf as being really “hot” and thinking things are “clicking for now” and hopes he could “keep it up” to which Foley said he replied with “Keep this up, this is who you are now.”

Very good stuff and great to listen to him talk golf, bio mechanics and philosophy. Very engaging speaker and person.
