Canadian Open Qualifying Needs More Players

Golf Canada is, kind of surprisingly, struggling to find enough competitors to make its regional RBC Canadian Open qualifying work. In past years all qualifying was done in Ontario — and it was always full. This year there was a regional qualifier in British Columbia, and final qualifying is the Monday before the Canadian Open.

If you’re interested, you have until tomorrow to register…

On Monday, June 20, Golf Canada is set to run the Ontario Regional Qualifier for the 2011 RBC Canadian Open at the Club at Bond Head.

While registration for the Regional Qualifier has been good (especially considering the Canadian Tour is on its western swing and the Canadian PGA Championship is taking place this week in Alberta), we have not reached a field size of 100 competitors by our registration deadline date (June 7) which was a pre-requisite to offer the champion of the regional qualifier a direct exemption into the 2011 RBC Canadian Open.

To that point, we are extending the player registration deadline for the Ontario Regional Qualifier until end of day Thursday, June 16 to see if we can fill the last few spots to get us to 100 competitors.  We are also reaching out to some of our media and association partners to see if they can help get those final few spots filled – hoping you might consider sharing a quick note with readers.

With or without the 100 competitors and a champion’s exemption in the RBC Canadian Open, Golf Canada will provide the top 15% of the field from the Ontario Regional Qualifier a spot into the final qualifying stage to be held Monday, July 18th at Morgan Creek Golf Club in South Surrey, British Columbia.

The field for the Final Monday Qualifier is expected to include between 50 and 60 competitors with four exemptions available directly into the 2011 RBC Canadian Open.
