I thought it was very deserving that Smon Khan won last week’s PGA Championship at the revised Wentworth Club in London. A pro for 19 years, born in 1972, it was Simon’s second win, and very timely for he and his family.
Last October, during the DUNHILL event in St Andrews, Simon came into the golf shop and asked if he could use our range, and could we give him a bucket of balls. The 3rd round of the Dunhill had been cancelled due to high winds and many of the pros were either playing our Torrance Course or practising. I noticed a few minutes later that Simpn was hitting next to an older woman player who was hitting a lot of ground balls. I then saw Simon assisting the lady, for the next 45 minutes! Anyway, an hour later the lady came into the shop for another bucket of balls. She then asked me “does that gentleman who was helping me so much come here often?”
I then told her he was Simon Khan and was only here this week to play in the Dunhill.
“is he one of the amateurs playing?” she asked. “Nope, he’s a pro and is even par after two rounds” was my response.
“Oh my God” was her answer. “He was so nice and very helpful”
And that’s why I was happy to see a nice guy win the biggest event on the European Tour last week.
