Ever heard of Unioin Bay Golf Links? I didn’t think so — but check out the video and images of Gil Hanse’s latest on Vancouver Island. The video is here for the time being, but I’ll try to find a way to embed it in this post later.
For those that don’t know Hanse, he’s an American designer, a former associate of Tom Doak and recently worked with Ian Andrew to restore Scaboro G&CC in Toronto. He’s also the designer behind Castle Stuart in Scotland, which is highly anticipated.
Like the much discussed Cabot Links in Inverness, NS, Union Bay will have several remarkable holes along the water. Hanse told me it would be similar in some elements to Bandon Trails, the third course at Bandon Dunes Resort, with the difference being the seaside holes. The final handful of holes look remarkable.
Looks like it will be an amazing course. BC is certainly moving well into the lead in developing Canada’s best new courses……….
Ottawa – BC may also be moving into the lead in developing the worst…
Tighthead
Care to expand on that comment?
The Rise is apparently dreadful. Tower Ranch and Tobiano are spectacular, but getting very mixed reviews. They all offer scenic cart golf with forced carries, very penal, etc. Maple Bay has hit the skids, and perhaps Wyndandsea has as well.
Many of the courses, particularly in the interior, are more sizzle than steak.
Looks good. I live in Comox and travel by the new development fairly often. A couple of things that seem to be missing are the houses and well the houses and more houses. It is a big development planned for there. Another thing missing is how are they crossing the highway? It is a busy road and with this and the other developments started or to be started soon it isn’t going to be even more so.
