Our New Gearhead: McCarten on Equipment

[photopress:JFM_afgh.jpg,full,alignleft]I want all G4G and readers to welcome noted writer and editor James McCarten to the site as the face of our equipment section, a segment of this site that now generates more than 10,000 readers a week.

I’ve known James for a long time — we went to the University of Western Ontario together, where he ran the student paper as editor and I tried to cobble copy together for the entertainment section. Now well more than a decade later, James is among the most respected journalists in Canada, and a senior editor at Canadian Press.

When he’s not making someone’s story better, he’s either on the golf course trying in vain to shrink his six handicap, dodging bullets on assignment in Afghanistan or putting off his latest freelance golf-writing gig to spend time with wife Lisa and school-age kids Claire and Lucas.

With 14 years of experience in Canadian journalism, James writes a monthly golf column for Up!, the in-flight magazine for WestJet Airlines, and reviews books for Golf Canada magazine, the official publication of the Royal Canadian Golf Association. He also suffers from a financially crippling addiction to all things Scotty Cameron.

James will be running our equipment section —’s Gearhead — and keeping readers posted on all things involving the latest drivers, irons, balls and clothing. He’ll comment on newly released products, and give readers a sense of what it means for the market and their handicap, as well as provide timely reviews alongside other contributors, like Fairway Stevie Waxman (who will continue with his equipment videos).

He’ll also be part of our video roundtable that will be launching in the spring.
