As seen in the National Post on Saturday, a Wayne Gretzky-hosted Nationwide Tour pro-am is coming to Collingwood on June 23. Here’s an taste from my story:
The Nationwide Tour will return to Canada at the end of June as part of a celebrity pro-am event championed by hockey legend Wayne Gretzky.
The event will be run from June 23-29 at two courses in the Collingwood area, about two hours north of Toronto. The first two days will be held at the Raven at Lora Bay, a course designed by Canadian Tom McBroom and PGA Tour pro Tom Lehman, while weekend play will be at the Georgian Bay Club.
The Nationwide Tour ran events in Canada as recently as 2005. The CPGA Championship, held at Whistle Bear Golf Club near Cambridge, Ont., was a Nationwide Tour event for five years, with winners such as Canadian Richard Zokol. Another event, the Alberta Classic, was held in Calgary and also finished after its 2005 swansong.
According to sources, the event will be patterned after the Nationwide Tour event at The Cliffs in South Carolina, which has featured celebrities such as movie star Kevin Costner, retired NFL quarterback John Elway and Gretzky, who is an avid golfer. The new Nationwide event is scheduled to appear in Canada for the next three years, sources said.
