Hot on the heels of K.J. Chois win at the Memorial using the SQ SUMO², Nike has announced June 22nd as the date the driver will be re-launched in Canada with its conforming version. The new conforming drivers will have a rounded etch mark on the sole between the SQ and Swoosh brand logos.
The SQ SUMO² is Nikes entry into the high Moment of Inertia (MOI) trend that has been the hot button in drivers in 2007. The clubs square head and high MOI limits the amount of twisting at impact and the company claims the club delivers more accuracy and distance.
The debate on these new breed of drivers is heating up. There is good word of mouth from early adopters but the jury is out on whether these new shapes and extraordinary sizes will be the future of drivers. Stay tuned to www.ontgolf.ca for our own debate in an upcoming post.
As for Nike, the company received high marks from the golf industry for the swift action they took back in March to inform the public that due to an unauthorized manufacturing variance, a number of fell outside the guidelines established by the USGA.
P.S. The memorial was Chois second PGA Tour win with the SQ SUMO². He also won the Chrysler Championship last fall.
