Interesting story today that Ernie Els ended his relationship with Acushnet (one year early) and signed with Callaway. This follows the lead set by Phil Mickelson last year who ended his Titleist contract early as well.
“I’m extremely excited to partner with Callaway Golf because of its ongoing product innovation and commitment to making the game of golf better for golfers,” said Els. “I am always looking to improve my game and my new relationship with Callaway Golf will play a key role in achieving this.”
According to PGATour.com it sounds like the feeling was mutual:
“Acushnet Company has reached a mutual business decision with Ernie Els to release him from his equipment contract effective immediately,” the company said in a statement earlier this week.
It will be interesting to see if this is a springboard for Els to get back to the form he has displayed as a past major champion. He stated earlier in the year that his goal was to become the number one golfer in the world. Perhaps new equipment is part of the plan.
