My latest Sympatico column, about Gil Hanse and his selection to design the course for the Olympics, is now live: It is surprising to see how little talk there is of golf courses when it comes to the professional game. Unlike baseball or football, golf’s playing field is always changing, always different every week. A ... Full Story »

Interesting to see the latest issue of Golf World, which includes Geoff Shackelford’s survey of PGA Tour pros commenting on what their favourite courses are. Two of the three regular courses for the Canadian Open do well: Vancouver’s Shaughnessy is at #7 and St. George’s, which held the tournament in 2010, is #22. Glen Abbey, ... Full Story »

I arrived home after a five hour drive from Pittsburgh yesterday having played Oakmont, without doubt one of the best in the world. Some quick thoughts: The club is quite friendly. We arrived for dinner Wednesday and just wandered into the clubhouse. Took about 10 minutes for someone to ask if we were meeting someone. ... Full Story »

“It’s probably the best course in the world . . . This is the greatest course I’ve ever played.” – Johnny Miller Most golf seasons are winding down after our unusual Indian Summer, but I’ve been looking forward to one last taste of greatness before the clubs get plunked in the basement to begin their ... Yesterday was spent at Marine Drive Golf Club where the Golf Journalists Assocation of Canada had its annual awards lunch and golf tournament. I won two second place showings — one for this story on RBC’s involvement with golf on Sympatico.ca and a second for a magazine feature I did on Moe Norman and the ... Full Story »

The final field for the RBC Canadian Open was announced tonight and includes some big stars — oh, and John Daly. That said, Retief Goosen is obviously on the bubble after pulling out of the British Open and Canadian hopeful Graham DeLaet sounds like he’s preparing to shut it down for the year, according to ... An exciting weekend is upcoming at Congressional GCC as Rory McIlroy enters the weekend with a 6 stroke lead at the U.S. Open. McIlroy set a number of U.S. Open records with his first two rounds – including hitting 13 under par – a score that had never been achieved at any previous open. Ever. ... Full Story »

Over the next four days, countless Canadians will clear their schedules and park themselves on the couch to tune into golf’s annual battle of attrition. Only the select few that have been inside the ropes at the U.S. Open, though, can truly grasp what they’re watching. “On TV, it’s tough to do it justice. Guys ... Full Story »

My second U.S. Open preview is live on Sympatico: Luke Donald isn’t big on expectations. Despite being ranked as the top golfer in the world, and in the midst of an incredible streak that has seen him out of the Top 10 only twice in his last 16 tournaments, the Englishman knows that he ... I read this quote on GeoffShackelford.com today: Reporting the U.S. Open is like covering an execution. A circus fire. Bring a hankerchief. The U.S. Open is a not a tournament, it’s hoodoo. It’s Hamlet with nine-irons. A pox, not a play. A movie where everybody dies in the end. JIM MURRAY Got my thinking that ... Full Story »
