A few years ago I recall having a conversation with then RCGA ED Stephen Ross about why the organization had struggled financially that year. He pointed to poor attendence at Canadian Open at Shaughnessy in Vancouver. The suggestion was that the RCGA made it sound like the tournament was a near sellout and then, well, ... read more »

Spent the day out at the terrific St. George’s G&CC this morning, first playing the course as part of a media outing, then spending some time with Mike Weir, defending champ Nathan Green, and finally interviewing RBC CEO Gord Nixon for a magazine story. Yep, been a busy day.
First and foremost, let’s talk about the ... read more »

The Globe’s Lorne Rubenstein raises some interesting possibilities when talking about where the Canadian Open may go after 2011 when it is at Shaughnessy in Vancouver. The piece doesn’t appear to be online yet, but essentially Rubenstein mentions the possibilities for courses beyond 2011. Those listed include Coppinwood, which the RCGA has taken a look ... read more »

I was there to see the design panel, involving Ian Andrew of Weir Golf Design, Doug Carrick ... read more »

When it was announced in 2002, the Terrebonne project (sometimes called CCQ), owned by Angus Glen proprietor Gordon Stollery and his business associate, Mike Columbos, was expected to hold the 2006 Canadian Open as part of a plan dreamed up by then RCGA executive director Stephen Ross. The plan called for two 18-hole golf courses, ... read more »

Not like this pairing is new, but this afternoon, as the sixth and seventh tarts to come out and say they’ve had “encounters” with Tiger Woods, the RCGA announced a $4-million 10-year partnership with corporate golf giant ClubLink. Call had plenty of interesting tidbits, not all of them intended. For example:
Scott Simmons, RCGA executive director, ... read more »

Just looking through the Steve Carroll press release from the RCGA from yesterday and some questions arise. First of all it looks like Carroll is being placed in charge of programs that no one has heard about.
“Carroll will recruit, train and manage Golf Canada Ambassador volunteers and will be counted on to help increase the ... read more »
