… Nope, not Tom Watson, but Bubba Watson. And given his recent win, he’s a strong addition.
Golf Canada and RBC announced several new names that have entered the Canadian Open field. Jim Furyk, twice a winner in Canada, is probably the most notable, and would have a good shot at winning at St. George’s:
Furyk, currently ... read more »

“I got my first letter from a college when I was, um, 14 I think.”
That’s the sort of thing that happens in the weird and wonderful world of Eugene Wong, perhaps Canada’s next golf star.
On Friday I drove out to Rattlesnake Point, the less than memorable Clublink facility near Milton, to get a sense of ... read more »

It wasn’t that long ago that everyone was talking about the challenging of Canada’s young golfers. Now Canadian amateurs have won both of the top US college awards this year, and took one of the top two prizes last year as well.
Yesterday Eugene Wong was named as the Nicklaus Award winner, as voted on by NCAA golf ... read more »

My latest Sympatico column is up — just as Matt Hill exceeds all other Canadians at the Memorial today. That column can be found on Sympatico’s sports site. Interesting to note that Hill always played Titleist clubs — but will be sponsored entirely by Nike now. Tough to make the move to the pros using the ... read more »

As I reported last week, Canadian amateur standout Matt Hill has announced he’ll turn pro today and play in the Memorial this week:
Matt Hill, who enjoyed one of the most successful seasons ever by a collegiate golfer last year, announced today that he is turning professional and signing with IMG, the world’s leading sports, entertainment and ... read more »

James Lepp was going to be Canada’s next superstar when he turned pro in 2006. He hooked up with IMG Sports after winning the NCAA individual men’s title. But his amateur success never translated into professional wins, despite a single victory on the Canadian Tour. He’s now out of professional golf, having launched his Kikkor-brand ... read more »

Interesting to see the new “amateur” golf blog (and I mean that it is about amateur golf, not written by an amateur) written by Chris Fry at ScoreGolf talking about how Brights Grove, Ont’s Matt Hill is turning pro at the end of his junior year. This comes on the news from an interview I ... read more »

Interesting news this morning from Royal Bank, which is increasing its investment in golf, including investments in “Team Canada,” the RCGA’s national amateur golf teams, as well as adding support “to the resurgence of Canada’s national amateur golf championships.”
Here’s RBC’s chief brand officer on the annoucement:
We are proud to support the RCGAs vision to drive ... read more »

On the same day the Golf Journalists Association of Canada voted Matt Hill in as the top Canadian male amateur, the RCGA named Nick Taylor as the country’s top college male player. So who is right?
I’d say the RCGA got this one correct. Anyway, here’s the details:
For the second year in a row, Nick Taylor ... read more »

The Golf Journalists Association of Canada, a group of 60 golf media members of which I’m part, today announced its top Canadian players for 2009. Some interesting results:
George Knudson Award for Best Male Professional of the Year:
Graham DeLaet,
Weyburn, Saskatchewan
DeLaet split his time in 2009 between the South African Sunshine Tour and the Canadian Tour. He ... read more »
