In 2003 I went to Scotland for the first time — the tour consisted of rounds at Stonehaven (while my wife was traveling with me), Belleisle, Turnberry’s two courses, Kingsbarns, The Old Course, The New Course, Murcar, Cruden Bay, Dornoch, Brora and finally the King’s Course at Gleneagles. When I returned I wrote a cover ... read more »

Here’s a repeat performance from a blog I wrote last year on playing Pebble Beach — one thing I’ve thought about a lot since last March is the cost. I’d bet that after playing Pebble Beach, no one is moaning about the $500 a couple of months down the road. They are only thinking that ... read more »

It wasn’t that long ago that everyone was talking about the challenging of Canada’s young golfers. Now Canadian amateurs have won both of the top US college awards this year, and took one of the top two prizes last year as well.
Yesterday Eugene Wong was named as the Nicklaus Award winner, as voted on by NCAA golf ... read more »

As I reported last week, Canadian amateur standout Matt Hill has announced he’ll turn pro today and play in the Memorial this week:
Matt Hill, who enjoyed one of the most successful seasons ever by a collegiate golfer last year, announced today that he is turning professional and signing with IMG, the world’s leading sports, entertainment and ... read more »

Interesting to hear the news that Matt Hill will make his debut as a professional next week at Muirfield for Jack Nicklaus’ tournament. According to Henry Brunton, coach of Golf Canada’s men’s national team, Hill made the decision to turn pro once he failed to make the NCAA championships, which he won last year. He ... read more »

Well worth watching this video interview with Steve Williams, Tiger Woods’ bag carrier, with New Zealand’s version of 60 Minutes. Is it just me or is he even more unlikable in this interview than ever?
In other news, Woods is back at Isleworth hitting balls. I’d be very surprised if he doesn’t show up at Bay Hill ... read more »

The Golf Journalists Association of Canada, a group of 60 golf media members of which I’m part, today announced its top Canadian players for 2009. Some interesting results:
George Knudson Award for Best Male Professional of the Year:
Graham DeLaet,
Weyburn, Saskatchewan
DeLaet split his time in 2009 between the South African Sunshine Tour and the Canadian Tour. He ... read more »

Okay, there’s strange, then there’s this — the National Golf Course Owners’ Association honoring Gary Player with the first “Golf Business Canada” lifetime achiecement award. Why? Can’t say. The only course he’s designed in Canada (Wildstone in Cranbrook) seems dead in the water. Other than that, I’m trying to figure out what business he’s done ... read more »

I’ve always been fascinated by golf course developers who know exactly what they want. Far too often those that build golf courses haven’t a clue beyond the concept that a course will help sell real estate. That’s often been the case in Canada — and led directly to the failure of several high-profile projects where the ... read more »
