I’ve been hanging on the sidelines as others discussed SCOREGolf’s biennial ratings of Canadian courses. The list is floating around several spots online after the magazine was sent out early by accident. Anyway, if you’re keen on seeing me talk about the list, I’ll be on TSN tomorrow at noon, alongside SCORE editor Bob Weeks ... read more »

With golf showing for the holidays (and me tiring of writing about Tiger), I thought I’d take the time to reflect on some of my experiences in 2009.
As anyone who reads this blog knows, I have a passion for golf design and great golf courses. This year was a spectacular one for me in that ... read more »

Someone asked me if I’d traveled much this year and I immediately replied no. Then I thought about it. Yep, a fair bit, actually. Pebble Beach, Los Angeles, Bandon Dunes and England/Wales in the spring, followed by Highlands Links and Kamloops in the summer, and finished by Long Island, NY a couple of weeks back. ... read more »

I’ve written extensively about what is going on at Highlands Links (including a recent ScoreGolf feature that I can’t find online or I’d link to it. This post from last year has 45 comments on it, so it must have resonated with some…) Anyway, thanks to reader Greg for a photo of the trees taken ... read more »

The second year I wrote my Going for the Green column for the National Post I had the good fortune of playing a round of golf with Jack Poole, the force behind BC’s 2010 Winter Games bid. Poole was a lot of fun — interesting, humble — and we had a good time touring Capilano in ... read more »

Every year since 2005 at about this time I’ve returned for a game at Oviinbyrd, the private club that was established by Peter Schwartz, the former CEO of tech company Descartes Systems. I covered Descartes when I wrote tech for the National Post, and got to know Peter well — as well as his love ... read more »

The most recent issue of Golf Magazine published its Top 100 golf courses of the world and Top 100 in the U.S.
Perhaps not surprisingly, there are only two Canadian courses on the list, namely St. Georges in Toronto and Highlands Links in Nova Scotia. The spiral of Highlands Links continues, with the course dropping to ... read more »

I was playing Firerock Golf Club near London on the weekend when I saw a copy of the latest ScoreGolf perched on the counter in the pro shop. This is the so-called “public golf issue,” one where Score ranks the top public golf courses in each region.
Why an issue on public golf, especially one coming ... read more »

I’ll do a longer, more thorough discussion of what is going on at Cape Breton’s Highlands Links, which I’m now convinced is the best course in Canada, at a later date. But the one thing I did want to show was the remarkable changes brought about by tree removal on holes 7, 9, 12, and ... read more »

Last year I attended a symposium on Stanley Thompson’s work that was held at Highlands Links. I had several people ask why it wasn’t better publicized and whether we’d consider doing it again. Well we are — this time in Toronto and with Lorne Rubenstein as the keynote speaker, as well as participation from another ... read more »
