The Globe’s Lorne Rubenstein raises some interesting possibilities when talking about where the Canadian Open may go after 2011 when it is at Shaughnessy in Vancouver. The piece doesn’t appear to be online yet, but essentially Rubenstein mentions the possibilities for courses beyond 2011. Those listed include Coppinwood, which the RCGA has taken a look ... read more »

First it was Kevin Thistle leaving for Coppinwood. Then it was former Bond Head top dog Nigel Hollidge joining. Then #2 JC Cunningham departed. Lots of change over a couple of months at the normally very stable Angus Glen GC. Then today the latest casualty was Dennis Firth, who was with the course for more ... read more »

I suspect it isn’t altogether surprising that changes in the industry occur during a year when many in the golf business are struggling. The most recent job announcements hit Angus Glen GC, which saw long-time president Kevin Thistle depart for Coppinwood earlier this year, and Nigel Hollidge from Bond Head move over to help run the ... read more »

I’ve written for Ontario Golf — or OG as it is known — since 2001 when Ted McIntyre took the position of editor and launched the publication. Today OG announced its fifth biennial Top 50 ranking, which apparently includes a Top 100 online.
The website is pretty thorough, including a Top 50 throughout the five ... read more »

Lots happening in golf now, though it seems like the season is winding up in Ontario. I know this is the case when my instructor, the venerable Bruce McCarrol, starts announcing his last lesson (last week of Sept., in case you were wondering).
Anyway, here’s thoughts that could become columns:
Adam Scott. Come again? Adam Scott? Yep, Greg ... read more »

Course Review: Sagebrush Golf and Sporting Club
Designers: Rod Whitman, Richard Zokol, Armen Suny
Few courses in Canada have been so widely anticipated “ and viewed as such precarious ventures “ as Richard Zokols Sagebrush. Okay, maybe Tom Fazios Coppinwood had more hype, and I think most people heard Tobiano would be special, and clearly Cabot Links ... read more »

Last night at the SCOREAwards I bumped into Nigel Hollidge, the former GM at Taboo and The Club at Bond Head. Nigel is always an interesting chap with strong opinions who really turned Bond Head around before the real estate market soured and the owners decided on a different strategy.
Anyway, Hollidge told me last night ... read more »

Last Thursday provided me with an opportunity to go and see Granite Club, a Tom McBroom design located near Stouffville. I’ve played it a few times — including a media day that now turns out to be nearly a decade ago. How the time flies.
On a lovely day in May, with the sun hanging high ... read more »

Interesting news crossed my desk today that led me to consider the state of the Canadian golf course business. Not that this is new for me — I wrote about the matter in the latest issue of ScoreGolf (which I can’t find a link to online — hardest thing about the Score site is finding ... read more »

What is so significant about a club pro leaving for another club that it warrants its own blog post? If you have to ask that question you’ve don’t know Kevin Thistle.
Almost on his own, Thistle, who joined Angus Glen Golf Club in Markham, Ont. in 1994, has created a new perception of the course manager/head professional. With ... read more »
