The second round of the RBC Canadian Open saw thunderstorms hit the golf course in the early morning, delaying play. But the round was completed nonetheless, with notable names like Paul Casey and yes, Mike Weir, heading home before the weekend starts. Speaking of Weir, he hit one of the worst shots I’ve ever seen ... read more »

The fifth day of the Canadian Open starts with — drum roll please — rain. Play has been delayed until 9 am this morning, and looking at the radar, that might be optimistic.
Let’s start with me. My notes package on the first round for Sympatico and Reader’s Digest is here. My column featuring on Hunter ... read more »

Interesting and very busy day at a warm RBC Canadian Open. First of all, in response to the blurb I wrote about a speed trap on Islington Ave. that pulled over a van with a player in it traveling to the range, turns out that player was Paul Azinger. And one driver told me Zinger ... read more »

A few months back, Dr. Karl Morris, mental coach to the likes of Lee Westwood, Darren Clarke and others, came through Toronto. I couldn’t free the time to go see him, but soon afterwards Dr. Chris Baxter, from Vancouver, wrote to me about explaining the notion of mental coaching and golfers.
Dr. Baxter is North America’s ... read more »

“I got my first letter from a college when I was, um, 14 I think.”
That’s the sort of thing that happens in the weird and wonderful world of Eugene Wong, perhaps Canada’s next golf star.
On Friday I drove out to Rattlesnake Point, the less than memorable Clublink facility near Milton, to get a sense of ... read more »

It wasn’t that long ago that everyone was talking about the challenging of Canada’s young golfers. Now Canadian amateurs have won both of the top US college awards this year, and took one of the top two prizes last year as well.
Yesterday Eugene Wong was named as the Nicklaus Award winner, as voted on by NCAA golf ... read more »

My latest Sympatico column is up — just as Matt Hill exceeds all other Canadians at the Memorial today. That column can be found on Sympatico’s sports site. Interesting to note that Hill always played Titleist clubs — but will be sponsored entirely by Nike now. Tough to make the move to the pros using the ... read more »

As I reported last week, Canadian amateur standout Matt Hill has announced he’ll turn pro today and play in the Memorial this week:
Matt Hill, who enjoyed one of the most successful seasons ever by a collegiate golfer last year, announced today that he is turning professional and signing with IMG, the world’s leading sports, entertainment and ... read more »

Interesting to hear the news that Matt Hill will make his debut as a professional next week at Muirfield for Jack Nicklaus’ tournament. According to Henry Brunton, coach of Golf Canada’s men’s national team, Hill made the decision to turn pro once he failed to make the NCAA championships, which he won last year. He ... read more »

The Royal Canadian Golf Association still exists — if you are interested in having your golf course rated for handicap purposes, or you happen to need a rules decision. But otherwise it is now Golf Canada. The RCGA’s executive director Scott Simmons has been talking about the move for months, and has put some money behind ... read more »
