Struggling Canadian Mike Weir is back working with at least half of the team known for the Stack and Tilt swing theory, my sources confirmed today. Andy Plummer has apparently had a session with Weir and will join him at the Canadian Open next week along with Grant Waite, who was seen working with Weir earlier this year. Weir is on holiday with his family and could not be reached for his perspective.
Weir was one of the most successful pupils of the stack and tilt swing theory, and played his best golf after adopting it in 2006 through 2008. Weir officially stopped working with Plummer and Mike Bennett in 2009, and returned to his old swing coach, Mike Wilson. At the time Weir said he felt stack and tilt was hurting his feel on some shots. Since then Weir has worked with a host of swing coaches including David Leadbetter, Mike Wilson (again), Jim Flick, Jack Nicklaus, Waite (another Stack and Tilt student), and most recently Butch Harmon. He’s made two cuts this week playing on a partial injury exemption stemming from an elbow injury last year.
Weir missed the cut at the John Deere Classic last week and the former Top 10 player in the world who has played on multiple Presidents Cup teams is currently ranked 467 in the world, behind fellow Canadian Jon Mills who plays on the Nationwide Tour.
Given all the changing instructors, it strikes me as odd that Weir hasn’t tried fellow Canadian Sean Foley, a fellow known to do a little stack and tilting himself.
That said, Weir must still be searching for some hidden nugget of information he hopes can put him back on track. I don’t quite understand the revolving door of coaches though — that must make the situation more confusing, at least at the start. That said, Weir’s last real success was when he was working with Plummer and Bennett, who have the reputation of being very singularly minded when it comes to their teaching methodology. That lack of flexibility is apparently what drove Weir away the first time. Perhaps it has changed in the past year or two.
