I sorely disappointed with Pebble Beach. Design wise, I would rate it OK, but it doesn’t compare to Spyglass Hill. SH is a fabulous track with elevation changes and every hole is different.
The only thing Pebble has over SH are the vistas.
    Great story though RT.

    Love this post Robert.

Great picture of Liam – how can you not smile looking at that happy face? Tremendous.

    BJ,

I would like to debate you on Spyglass.

After the 5th hole – I found it the most monotonous collection of holes I have seen on a “top 100 course.” The fours are all very long and finish with elevated greens with bunkers usually on both sides. Almost all of them are long uphill slogs that simply bludgeon the golfer to depth. All the threes are downhill over water. The fives were the same before the pond came out on #11.

There’s no variety in the architecture – it’s just hard as hell. How’s this a great course, unless you are a low single digit player who loves to put your game to the ultimate test?

This live-in girlfriend who became your wife forgives you for the pink hat and heading off to Cali to play while I watched the toddlers, especially after reading this post. It brought a tear to my eye. I love how worn US Open Bear looks in this pic. He is a much-loved bear.

RT. From the comments, it sounds like you’ve earned enough brownie points to merit another golf trip.

Cute story, but the picture tells it all.

    Wonderful story.

I’ll be sure to keep this advice in mind for my impending visit to Pebble…

My daughter has asked for a Puffin from Bandon Dunes.

This post is timely as you are about to spend your brownie points in Wales, no?

This is one of your best written posts ever Robert. It is easy to be sentimental, but hard to avoid the maudlin, and you did.

I read your whole post . . . don’t always do that . . .really enjoyed it . . . you should buy stuffed bears more often . . .time for bed!

Well done, Robert! While I have never played either course, I have spent some time in the area and can easily envision the gloaming that met you both on 18. More importantly, your little ursine souvenir brought home the experience to share with little Liam. I believe you buried the cute-o-meter with that pic. In one!

Pebble is expensive. Pebble is not perfect.

But, 6 through 10 create a lifetime of memories.

It has been almost 20 years since I last played there, but I am going back next year, and I can’t wait.

As for Cypress, I can only dream. While I have been fortunate to play some of the finest (and most private) courses in the world, Cypress is the one that has always been at the top of my list.

Glad to hear that it was as great as I have always imagined.
