While the Presidents Cup garners the attention, Vernon’s Chris Baryla is quietly playing his way on to the PGA Tour by leading the Nationwide Tour’s Chattanooga Classic after three rounds. If he wins, it’ll vault him among the Top 25 Nationwide Tour players who immediately gain access to the PGA Tour next year. The money list on the Nationwide is so top heavy that anyone down to the Top 60 could make it in with a strong finish. A win would almost certainly give Baryla a spot.
I’ve written about Baryla extensively since I first met him as an amateur at the Canadian Open in 2003. He’s 26 and started the year on an injury exemption. I wrote about his comeback here.
He’s also a character and not afraid to speak his mind — which would make him a great asset to Canadian golf. I hope he pulls it off tomorrow.
