    RT,

Do you think the first would play better as a par 4 with the tees moved up? It is kind of a pushover as a 5.

When does DZ hope to be fully private?

  2. phil

pushover? did you have an early morning tee time? its well uphill -and the afternoon winds generally hurt/cross RtoL no?

I’m very impressed with what I see.

I think Rod and Jeff have done a wonderful job with a tough site. I have to also credit Dick with having a vision of what he was looking for.

One of our fundamental solutions to routing challenges at Sagebrush was to immediately deal with the elevation changes on our massive property. It made great sense to start out with a gentle opening 3-shot hole, to get a large portion of elevation out of the way, right out of the blocks. Having said this, even with an 85-yeard wide fairway by no means is it easy or should it be considered for a 2-shot hole. A player needs to be in full engagement with their ability to assess and execute to play the 1st hole effectively. Whitman did an excellent job in routing this as the opening hole. Our philosophy was to make the opening hole very inviting as well as forgiving for the golfer.
Sagebrush is a private club now. Membership and guest of Sagebrush are by invitation only. Invitations to play 1 or 2 day experiences need to go through Terry Donald or myself. If any interested party makes an inquiry we would be pleased to invite them under our non member policy.
The Sagebrush membership policy is an annual “Posse Invitation” structure similar to Redtail’s “Roundtable”. This ensures the type of culture that is already established. This form of membership removes an element that is constantly problematic at most all private clubs.
The design collaboration between Whitman, Suny and myself produced Sagebrush to be the special course that we believe it is. The design process of 3 unique individuals, each with different perspectives, formed the style, features and playability that make Sagebrush completely unique to Canada.

    Richard,

You have done a remarkable job – it is a special course.

If everyone thinks #1 is a tough hole, I imagine I will triple it the next chance I get to play it. I was likely fooling myself – I have been in full engagement with my ability about twice in my life.

Congratulations – we finally have a course in BC that is the equal of its site.

i’d argue that it likely exceeds the site – i think there are some other well known archs that looked at the site prior to Whitman and determined it too severe – or at least too severe for Zoke’s vision. True?

It’s fair to say that given the challenges of the site in addition with what is consistent in today’s general design work, Sagebrush has exceeded market expectations.
Once it was confirmed there were enough benches on the property to design good playable golf for 18 holes, the challenge of elevation on the property immediately swung well in favour for the project with the stunning views & privacy aspects.
The first time we looked at the site (Whitman and Suny included) said the site was more conducive for a ski-hill rather than a golf course. Armen continually says Sagebrush blends links-style golf in an alpine environment.
Reportedly, Les Furber did a routing for the Quilchena Ranch prior to the ranch going after the initial permitting. And when Jim Urbina came up to look at the site, he did a preliminary routing on the spot. We were looking at Renaissance Design as well in the early stages. Urbina is a great individual, one of the best in the game and was looking at getting the job. On Crenshaw’s personal recommendation to me in my situation, I went with Whitman and brought in Suny.
To answer the question… no one said it was too severe…. actually, the only group that declined my offer was Coore/Crenshaw Inc., because their plate was full.

Phil – it does exceed the site. In BC, we have many spectacular sites with second rate courses. Views and penal strategies seem to pay the freight.

The routing is an achievement to say the least. I would love to contrast it with whatever Furber did.

The site may be on the edge of severe, but the layout and routing brings it well back from the edge.

I’m not one for hype. I think the “minimalist” design bandwagon is horse shit. Move all the land you need if it makes for a better golf hole. Prior to my visit to Sagebrush earlier this week, I had a preconceived notion of what this course would be like. What the club would be like. Boy was I wrong on both accounts. Like Robert stated above, Sagebrush is one of golf’s great experiences. I’ve been extremely fortunate to play many of the greatest most exclusive golf clubs in North America. To even think that a club so new and with so much advance hype could be legitimately compared to Bandon, Kingsbarn, or Redtail is preposterous. But in reality, absolutely justified.

Earlier this summer a friend of mine recounted a story of how his playing partner at The Kingsley Club in Michigan was so captivated by the course that he bought a membership at the end of the round. That guy lived over 300 miles away. What are you nuts I thought? After playing 36 holes at Sagebrush I too became so enthralled with the course and club that I bought a membership. Only instead of 300 miles I live almost 3000 miles away! My wife is going to kill me. But such is the irresistible draw of Sagebrush.

    Dear Richard,

Sagebrush is a triumph! A day will not pass without thinking of Sagebrush until I get there again.

I have been a huge fan of Bandon Trails since playing it in 2005. I am also a huge fan of the Lord of the Rings movies. If you are ever in search of a new way to describe Sagebrush, may I suggest – Bandon Trails Meets The Gap of Rohan?

    Matt,

Glad you guys enjoyed Sagebrush. Funny you should mention Bandon Trails, it’s my preference of the first three Bandon course, from a playability standpoint. Not sure what to think of your Gap of Rohan thoughts, but it does sound like it stimulated your creativity.
