RT your comments are polite this time around! I played Mystic for the first time the day before on Thursday. I do not remember a course that I have enjoyed less. It was the longest quick round (under 4 hours) I have played in a while! The only positive were the greens, they rolled very nicely. Even though #9 and #18 are good par 4s by the time I got to them I was tired of all the forced carries on this course. I just think GN needs to bulldoze this course and start over.

My first look at Mystic was in early September on a hot and windy day. Course wasn’t very busy (weekday mid morning) and so I played as a single and I really enjoyed it. I had been aware of the various reviews of this course and so had certain expectations starting off (poor conditioning, tough layout). I played fairly well and so that helped (I am a bogey golfer), but as I reached the 4th hole and already had two forced carries off the tee, I did think that this certainly was not a course for the average golfer – that is confirmed by the rest of the course, including 9, 10, and 18. 10 played very tough because of the wind and became a 4 shot hole, with my second being a PW “layup”. I also thought the approach area for the supposed second shot was a bit small and didn’t really give the player a lot of room to work with. The large bunker in the middle of 9 was not a welcome site from the tee – yes, I know it is there and it can be avoided, but it certainly doesn’t reward a typical well played shot.

I found the conditioning to be fine/ok overall – I had noted the bare patch on #4 and it affected my chip onto the green as I had to hit right into it, forcing my ball to take a hard turn to the left. Conditions could have been better, but they weren’t awful – it has been a dry summer and GN only took over in the early summer so I am willing to give this a bit more time.

I played on a GN pass that meant I only paid for the cart and so it was a great deal for me. As Robert noted, $65 seems to be a pretty good price and as I was finishing it was around the 2pm twilight time and it was much busier with a lot of groups getting ready to go off.

I will play again as I found it to be a good challenge and it is different – in a good way. It is tough but I find that if you are a reasonable golfer, it is a place where you can enjoy yourself. I can think of many of my more casual golfer friends, though, who would not. Also, I can’t think that this course could attract any kind of company or charity tournaments – way too hard for that, along with the lack of clubhouse amenities, though that latter part could at least be corrected.

I agree that GN is doing things right at this point and there is hope for this course.

Also, I had found this little snippet from an archived article on scoregolf.com – it was about Ontario Courses 2005.

“Another high-end golf course that has been off the radar screen during its two-year build is The Heritage Club at Ancaster on Jerseyville Road. American architect Tom Pearson designed the 5,200-7,400-yard, par-72 layout. He was an associate with Jack Nicklaus’ design firm for two decades. It covers some 300 acres including a 70-acre doubled-ended practice facility with three training/warm-up holes. It’s scheduled to open in July with a $175 green fee that includes taxes and cart.”

Some changes from that – name, as well as fee. I am guessing those warmup holes, which were barely recognizable from the drive in to the course, will remain grown over and won’t be restored?

Thanks for the update on Mystic. I was one of the early platinum members and thought the course was very tough but fair. Before joining I was a 18 hdcp which dropped to under 11 before my year was complete. I too became frustrated when Berger made bad decision after bad decision and decided not to go back. The best that can be said about that first year is that John Hayward was great and would be valued at any course and it wasn’t too crowded so lots of 36 hole days.

As far as design I agree with some of the comments (especially the ones on #6) albeit you underappreciate others (such as 13). I think you missed a comment on the blind shot on 3 to some pin placements as well.

If GolfNorth can look after it and put together a package for frequent golfers, I’ll definitely go back. The course has massive potential if they can get everyhting worked out.
