Once again I’m running from point A to point B (meaning Vancouver after playing Colwood this morning), but I had to take a moment to speak about my round at the stunning cool and intriguing Victoria Golf Club yesterday.
The most prestigious of the private clubs in Victoria, with an initiation of $28,000, Victoria is tight and sporty, on less than 100 acres of land. It is also the oldest course on the same location in Canada, having been initially designed in the late 19th century. I’d always been told it had some cool elements, but was too tight.
What I found was a throw back to another era, the type of course people love to play in Scotland. A comparable course would be Crail, south of St. Andrews. Certainly the ocean holes are among the most breathtaking in all of Canada, and though the course only measures 6,000 yards, it is likely the longest 6,000 yard course in the country. The greens were fascinating, the bunkering subtle and quite rustic. Sure there were some holes that were fascinatingly close to things like roads, parking lots, clubhouses, etc., but that seems to be the charm of the place. EVERYONE has played the course — from Ben Hogan to Babe Zaharias to George Knudson — and though some have shot 60 on calm days, the course is rarely brought to its knees. A real treat.

glad you liked Victoria GC. Years ago I stayed with the Trapp family (Malcolm was the Pro) and played many rounds with Vaughn Trapp their pro son (deceased before his time). Loved the place, one round we played with a 102 year old who “was a bit off as he’s fallen off a tee”). hard to imagine Victoria is in the same province as Vancouver!
