Though it is located in an urban area just north of Toronto, Eagles Nest Golf Club might fool some into believing the course is actually located on the coast of Scotland or Ireland. Designer Doug Carrick imported massive amounts of earth on this former quarry to create faux dunes that line the fairways of many of the holes. Punctuated by a mix of natural-looking“blowout” and traditional grass-faced bunkers, Eagles Nest’s front nine deceives golfers by starting on a relatively sedate par-5, before plunging almost 100 feet off the tee on the third hole into a valley. The course rises out of this valley at the end of the front nine and emerges in an area of massive fescue-faced hills with holes that offer a unique link-style experience. The final holes – the 17th, a par-5 with a split fairway and a multitude of pot bunkers, and the 18th, a long par-4 bounded by water on the right – prove a challenging finishing kick to a difficult course.
Backed with an opulent clubhouse and terrific practice facilities, Eagles Nest has already earned a spot as rivaling Canada’s best private clubs, and is surely among the top public courses in North America.
