Developed on top of an abandoned Stanley Thompson design, this Doug Carrick creation is unique, and not just for the golf course. A visit to the course starts with a five-minute boat ride across Lake of Bays to the island with its dock perched below the stunning white-and-red clubhouse and the 18th green sitting nearby.
Thankfully the golf course doesn’t fail to live up to this early intrigue. Though early holes titillate rather than excite, the sixth hole, a par-4 with a stunning view of the surrounding landscape and a tee shot that falls more than 100-feet to the fairway below, is a good indicator of things to come. Dramatic elevations shift continue, and the 18th hole, a par-5 that plays downhill to a green situated near the lake, is among the best closers in Canada.
The initial Bigwin Island course was the hub of Muskoka, a summer cottage region about two hours north of Toronto. During the Roaring Twenties, guests would play golf during the day and take in shows by musical legends at night. Though no longer the cultural centre of the area, Bigwin Island’s idyllic setting continues to lure those intrigued by a fascinating golfing experience.

this place is amazing! the history, the vistas. great use of elevation, although i didnt use all my clubs, it was still a good test of ball placement and strategy. the wide fairways are great, lets be realistic of what the majority of golfers are capable of, and landing zones 20-30 yds wide are not conducive for play.

I do love the par-4 sixth hole. One of the cooler views in Ontario golf.
