I’ve long wanted to see Pete Dye’s Teeth of the Dog in the Dominican Republic. I’ve read Dye’s autobiography — Bury Me in a Pot Bunker — and played a fair number of his designs. Though he isn’t my favourite designer of the modern era, you’ve got to respect his influence and the number of ... Full Story »

My latest Sympatico column, about Gil Hanse and his selection to design the course for the Olympics, is now live: It is surprising to see how little talk there is of golf courses when it comes to the professional game. Unlike baseball or football, golf’s playing field is always changing, always different every week. A ... Full Story »

A lot of people in the industry were surprised today when it was announced that American Gil Hanse would create the Olympic Course for the 2016 Olympics. Most felt one of the big names — Jack Nicklaus and Annika Sorenstam or Greg Norman and Lorena Ochoa — would get the work. Instead they turned to ... Full Story »

I was intrigued to be told (by a Twitter follower no less) that Vancouver’s Shaughnessy and Point Grey are looking at a potential merger that would pair two of the city’s better private clubs. In a document leaked to me (see the details here), the two clubs document their discussions, including the fact Shaughnessy paid ... Full Story »

I’m just working through a feature on Cape Breton Island’s Cabot Links, the best new course I’ve seen in some time, and transcribed a recent interview I did with Mike Keiser, the creator of Bandon Dunes in Oregon, currently judged to be the best golf resort in the world, and the co-owner of Cabot. Keiser, ... Full Story »

I was saddened to hear about the passing of Geoff Cornish today. He was 97. With the exception of Bob Moote, Cornish was the last remaining architect to have worked alongside Canadian golf designer Stanley Thompson. He was also a fine historian who compiled, along with Ron Whitten, the definitive who’s who book on golf ... Full Story »

I had the good fortune to play all three of the courses used in the rotation for this week’s AT&T tournament, so I thought I’d just take a second to highlight those reviews. Pebble Beach Monterey Peninsula Spyglass I’ll say this — regardless of the proponents for Spyglass, there’s no way it is a better ... Full Story »

A couple of months ago my former editor at T&L Golf (RIP) asked me about participating in a new world Top 100 panel for course rankings. I was delighted — I’ve never been part of a world panel, though I’ve participated in Ontario and Canadian ones, as well as Golf Digest’s panel. At the time ... Full Story »

One of my favourite Kids in the Hall skits (yes, the underrated Canadian comedy troop that still gets together upon occasion) is called “Rod Torfulson’s Armada.” Essentially the skit (which you can find here) involves a teen rock band called “Armada.” The father of the drummer, Rod Torfulson, shows up at practice and chimes in ... After hearing the news that Kelowna’s Tower Ranch is being actively shopped across Canada, I took a look to see what the state of Tobiano, the other Tom McBroom course in the area. As you’ll recall, Tobiano went into receivership last year. The Bowra Group was appointed to run the property, including the golf course, ... Full Story »
