A couple of months ago my former editor at T&L Golf (RIP) asked me about participating in a new world Top 100 panel for course rankings. I was delighted — I’ve never been part of a world panel, though I’ve participated in Ontario and Canadian ones, as well as Golf Digest’s panel. At the time ... Full Story »

One of my favourite Kids in the Hall skits (yes, the underrated Canadian comedy troop that still gets together upon occasion) is called “Rod Torfulson’s Armada.” Essentially the skit (which you can find here) involves a teen rock band called “Armada.” The father of the drummer, Rod Torfulson, shows up at practice and chimes in ... After hearing the news that Kelowna’s Tower Ranch is being actively shopped across Canada, I took a look to see what the state of Tobiano, the other Tom McBroom course in the area. As you’ll recall, Tobiano went into receivership last year. The Bowra Group was appointed to run the property, including the golf course, ... Full Story »

The Scorecard: Vancouver GC is one of those courses that gets overlooked. Part of it is likely because the club isn’t hugely keen on publicity, though it is hosting this year’s CN Canadian Womens Open (which could still mean it isn’t interested in publicity, I suppose). In fact, I had to talk my way into ... Full Story »

Welcome back to work! For me, most of January means getting through the writing of a coffee table book on Copper Creek, the Doug Carrick-designed golf course near Kleinberg, Ont. Like the project I completed for Eagles Nest in 2010, the Copper Creek book details how the property was found, the battle to get appropriate ... Full Story »

There is little doubt that, for me at least, 2011 was a busy, productive year full of interesting stories and fascinating golf. Over the the year I visited the west of Ireland, Cape Breton (twice), British Columbia and Pittsburgh to see new courses. I created a new magazine, developed another, worked on my fifth book ... Course: The Club at North Halton (Georgetown, Ont.) Designer: George Cumming, Bob Moote, Rene Muylaert The scorecard: North Halton is often discussed for all the wrong reasons. Insiders talk about the difficulty the club, which is located 45 minutes north of Toronto, has had in renovating its clubhouse, or gossip about supposed financial issues. I ... Full Story »

So none of the nine Canadians at PGA Tour qualifying school nailed down one of the coveted 25 spots on the PGA Tour. Sounds like a disappointment, I suspect, but I wonder if it is really that bad. After all — basically none of the Canadians who’ve advanced by Q School manage to hold onto ... Full Story »

There aren’t many golf courses being built in Canada — let alone those being tipped as potential sites for the RBC Canadian Open even before they are complete. But that’s exactly the situation Ian Andrew and Mike Weir find themselves involved with while they work through the complete redesign of Golf Laval sur le lac’s ... Full Story »
